Term 2.3

This post in currently being edited, check back later 🙂

Finally, it marks the final term of the year. If this were to be Nitec in Nursing, it would be the last Pre-Enrollment Clinical Practice (PECP) before I graduate but sadly, not. On the brighter side, I get to learn more things and just came to know that that there is a pay difference of $100 for Higher Nitec as compared to Nitec, not much but still helps. As for the 2-year Higher Nitec (April intake) or those who are from the 3-year and went to the accelerated programme (2.25 year) by joining the 2-year class, this would be their last term in-campus before they head to their PECP from January to March 2026. Looking back, I am happy that I didn’t get into the accelerated programme because I am able to have more time for my other personal commitments although initially, I wanted to get into the programme.

For this term, there is only 1 exam for HPS, the schedule is quite packed due to the high amount of credits which means more hours will be plotted to our schedule.

In-campus, there is now the Year 1 and Year 2 Work-Study Diploma (WSDip) in Nursing students as they are the October intake and the classroom is always packed to the point that we sometimes have to use classrooms that belongs to the other school.

This term, our Home-based Learning (HBL) is also held on every Thursday.

Our modules for this term are Health Psychology & Sociology (HPS), Foundations of Mother and Child (MOT), Wellness and Mindfulness (WEL), Personal & Professional Development 2 (PD2), and Sports and Wellness 2 (SW2).

On completion of the HPS module, students should be able to explain the psychological implications and adjustments during each stage of human development. Students should also be able to explain the basic sociological concepts in the context of the health care setting; and apply the relevant knowledge and skills to provide holistic care.

This module is graded based on Class Tests 1 and 2 (20 MCQ, 4 SAQ—20 % each), the Exam (30 MCQ, 6 SAQ—50%), and BAA (10%).

On completion of the MOT module, students should be able to describe and demonstrate holistic nursing care of specific groups of maternal and paediatric patients, and those with alterations of various body systems and requiring different treatment modalities.

This module is graded based on Class Test (30 MCQ—60%), the Exam (30 MCQ, 6 SAQ—50%), and Group Assignment (40%).

For the group assignment, we will have to design a health teaching aid based on the case scenario in any of the following format:-
Poster (A3 size)
Pamphlet (A4 size to be folded into 3 panel or 2 panel)
Flipchart (A4 size, to fold into half, between 5-10 pages)

With an individual reflection of 500 to 600 words.

The WEL module is designed to support nursing students in cultivating personal well-being, emotional resilience, self-awareness and self-compassion. The module introduces practical strategies to enhance students’ overall well-being and self-care practices and to develop mindfulness skills that reduce stress, increase focus, and improve emotional regulation.

This module is graded based on Group Written Assignment (60%) and Individual Presentation (40%).

For the Group Written Assignment, a group of 4 to 5 members is required to come out with 1500 words (Intro, Body, Conclusion) of the scenario which we are assigned to which is depression/sadness.

And for the Individual Presentation, each member of the group will have to prepare 1 to 2 PowerPoint (PPT) slide on the activity that they will be presenting for five minutes. Originally, the rules is the group members will have to present their activity to the whole class. But due to distractions, the lecturer have decided to change the rules and group members will only be the one in the assessment room presenting while the other members of the class will be at the holding room while waiting for their turn. Due to the large amount of groups, there are two dates for the presentation.

On completion of the BIO3 module, students should be able to identify and describe the various parts and functions of the system of the human body and discuss the use of pharmacological products and their nursing implications.

This module is graded based on Class Tests 1 and 2 (20 MCQ, 4 SAQ—20 % each), the Exam (30 MCQ, 6 SAQ—50%), and BAA (10%).

In the PD2 module, there are 6 competencies:
(1) Develop personal effectiveness in career
(2) Apply job-seeking skills
(3) SG Perspective: Acquire a responsibility towards Singapore’s future food security (and with jobopportunities in new industries)
(4) SG Perspective: Acquire an eco-sustainability mindset and a responsibility towards the environment (and with job opportunities in new industries)

On completion of the SW2 module, students should be able to:
• Acquire the skills and knowledge to achieve healthy body/mind and active lifestyle
• Engage actively in sports and recreational activities
• Imbue core values through sports and games
• Develop critical core skills through physical fitness and activities

The SW2 module is worth 1 credit. However, it will not affect the GPA. While, PD2 module is worth 2 credits and the GPA will be affected. For our SW2, our class managed to go to the gym for two times after close to two years. The venue will change every two weeks and usually, we would just do a simple warm-up before playing sports like badminiton, captain’s ball, basketball, and frisbee.

I have also came to know that for the Cancer and Palliative Care (CPC) module, it is hard so the Year 1 will be doing the Law and Ethics in Healthcare module instead of CPC.

For our CP3 briefing, I came to know that I am posted back to the same Medical Ward for the third time consecutively and the skills that I am required to perform are…
